Ed. Note: Welcome to our daily feature Trivia Question of the Day!

Every American law student who has ever dreaded a cold-call or slogged through a casebook can trace the torment to one man. Starting in 1870, which Harvard Law dean threw out the old model of lectures and memorization and rebuilt legal education around reading appellate decisions and getting grilled about them in class?

Hint: He insisted that law was a “science” and the library its laboratory, wrote the very first casebook himself because none existed, and weathered a near-revolt from students before his approach spread to nearly every law school in the country.

See the answer on the next page.
