FDA warns consumers about recalled donuts containing undeclared milk.
A nationwide recall has been issued for a popular mini chocolate donut product after a customer suffered a serious allergic reaction after eating the food. The Better Bakehouse Snack Company is pulling certain packages of Donutful Chocolate Dipped Vanilla Cake Donuts from stores because the product may contain milk that is not listed on the package, which can be life-threatening to individuals with an allergy to dairy products. Although the person who first reported the issue has made a full recovery, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall after the donut company voluntarily reported the incident.
The recalled chocolate donut product is sold as a package of ten. Each box weighs 7.05 ounces and contains five individual 1.41-ounce pouches. The affected packages carry UPC number 3 50041 39210 3. The recall does not cover every Donutful product. Only packages marked with a “Best If Used By” date of September 15, 2026, and lot code 26078 have been included. Customers who have other dates or lot numbers should check the packaging carefully before deciding whether the product is part of the recall.
The chocolate donut packs were distributed nationwide and were available at several well-known retailers, including Target, Kroger and Safeway. The product was also sold on Amazon. Because the donuts were shipped to stores in various parts of the U.S., particularly through the online marketplace, the recall applies to every state.
The issue began with a labeling mistake at a company that makes the product for Better Bakehouse. According to the investigation, the issue occurred back in March. The contract manufacturer has since taken steps to correct the labeling problem and prevent the same type of mistake from happening again. Moving forward, the products will clearly declare all known allergens on the packaging.
Undeclared milk can pose a serious health concern for people with milk allergies. Even a small amount can cause a reaction in some people. Possible symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, swelling, stomach problems, trouble breathing and other serious symptoms. In severe cases, a food allergy can become life-threatening. The FDA is advising customers who purchased the recalled donuts not to eat them. Instead, affected packages can be returned to the store where they were purchased for a refund. Customers should check the date and lot code on the package before returning the product instead of assuming every item purchased is concerning.
Better Bakehouse is also working with the companies that manufacture and sell the donuts to remove affected packages from store shelves. The company said consumer safety remains its top concern and that steps are being taken with its manufacturing partner and retailers to make sure the recalled products are removed from the market. The recall comes as federal food safety officials continue to monitor products that may contain ingredients missing from package labels. Food labels are required to identify major allergens so people with food allergies can make informed choices about what they eat.
