Justice Department reviews William & Mary programs for possible race discrimination.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has opened a review of scholarships and other benefits available to students at the College of William & Mary to determine whether race is being used in ways that violate federal law. The Civil Rights Division announced the review on August 17, saying it will examine programs at the Virginia college that may give preference to students based on race, color or national origin. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars discrimination based on those factors at schools and other programs that receive federal financial assistance. The department has not said specifically, however, that William & Mary broke the law.
