The red wave that wasn’t might register as mildly encouraging news for most Democrats, but the results in New York were a different story. Thanks in large part to a redistricting debacle that is directly attributable to the ego and mismanagement of Andrew Cuomo, a bunch of House of Representative seats in the Empire state went red. Including, notably, that of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Sean Patrick Maloney.
Another Democrat taking an L yesterday was former Biglaw partner Josh Riley, who lost to Marc Molinaro in the 19th congressional district. The former Biglaw attorney — he did time at both Boies Schiller and Jenner & Block — is originally from Endicott, NY — part of the district — but he couldn’t turn the hometown kid turned big time lawyer narrative into a victory.
Riley also had a cash advantage, as reported by Bloomberg Law:
He lost despite a $1.4 million cash lead in the race, including contributions from his former colleagues at Boies Schiller, Jenner & Block, and others who have moved to other powerful firms like Paul Weiss and King & Spalding.
But even the money couldn’t overcome those newly drawn maps.
