Satanic Temple sues Iowa officials over alleged unequal religious display treatment.
A federal lawsuit in Iowa alleges that state officials treated The Satanic Temple differently from other religious groups when considering requests for holiday displays at the state Capitol. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Iowa filed the case in federal court on behalf of The Satanic Temple, arguing that state officials violated the group’s constitutional rights by denying or delaying requests to hold a holiday event. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa and asks the court to intervene before a planned event this December.
The dispute follows several years of conflict over religious displays at the Iowa Capitol. In December 2023, an Iowa chapter of The Satanic Temple received permission to place a holiday display inside the Capitol. The display drew strong reactions from state leaders and members of the public. Gov. Kim Reynolds publicly condemned the display at the time, calling it “absolutely objectionable.”
The controversy continued into the following year. In 2024, the Iowa Senate considered legislation that would have banned Satanic displays on state property. The proposed law did not pass. According to the lawsuit, however, members of The Satanic Temple say they continued to face problems when seeking permission for holiday displays between 2024 and 2026.
The new lawsuit claims those decisions were not simply administrative disagreements. The ACLU of Iowa argues that the state treated The Satanic Temple differently from other religious organizations and, as a result, violated protections provided by both the U.S. Constitution and Iowa law.
The group is asking a federal judge to declare that state officials violated its rights to free speech, religious exercise and equal protection. The complaint also alleges violations of Iowa protections covering religious freedom and discrimination.
The First Amendment generally protects religious exercise and freedom of speech, while also limiting government action that favors one religious viewpoint over another. The lawsuit argues that those protections apply to members of The Satanic Temple in the same way they apply to other religious groups seeking to express their beliefs on public property.
Shefali Aurora, an ACLU of Iowa staff attorney, said the case concerns whether government officials can favor one set of religious beliefs over another. The organization maintains that members of the Iowa congregation should have the same opportunity to express their beliefs as other groups. The lawsuit also asks the court to order officials with the Iowa Department of Administrative Services to stop the alleged violations. The requested order would allow The Satanic Temple to hold a holiday event at the Capitol in December while the case moves through court.
The case places Iowa’s rules concerning religious displays back into public debate after several years of disputes surrounding the Capitol. The Satanic Temple’s 2023 display became a national point of discussion, with supporters describing it as an exercise of religious and freedom of speech rights and critics objecting to the group’s beliefs and presence in a government building. The state has not been found liable in the allegations contained in the complaint. The lawsuit represents The Satanic Temple’s claims, and these remain allegations until the case is decided in a federal court.
