Clarence Thomas

Justice Clarence Thomas.

Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to the hospital Friday evening and treated with intravenous antibiotics for an infection.

Thomas, 73, was experiencing flu-like symptoms when he was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., according to a Supreme Court press release. The New York Times, USA Today and the Washington Post are among publications with coverage.

The March 20 release said Thomas was resting comfortably, his symptoms were abating, and he expected to be released in a day or two.

Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe said Thomas did not have COVID-19 and was not suffering an illness related to the virus, according to the New York Times and the Washington Post. All the justices have received vaccines and boosters.

The court will hear oral arguments on Monday through Wednesday this week. Thomas will still participate in any cases he misses on the basis of briefs, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.
