We have some disturbing news to report out of the Houston, Texas, legal community, where two young law firm associates were identified earlier this week as the deceased in a recent murder-suicide. The associates in question are Candace Rechtmann, 29, and Tyler Greenwood, 31, who both died from gunshot wounds on January 25. Rechtmann, an associate at Germer, and Greenwood, an associate at Chamberlain Hrdlicka, were reportedly involved in a relationship that ended in the summer of 2022.
The Texas Lawyer has additional information from local police:
According to police, patrol officers responded to a welfare check call on the evening of Jan. 25 and found the woman, 29, and man, 31, suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced them deceased at the scene.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences found that Rechtmann was the victim of a homicide, with multiple gunshot wounds the cause of death. The institute found that Greenwood committed suicide and died due to a gunshot wound to the head.
Houston police reported that the man had a gun near his body and a gun holster in his waistband.
Rechtmann was a 2018 graduate of FSU Law, while Greenwood was a 2018 graduate of Emory Law. They had both completed federal clerkships before joining their respective firms.
Rett Holidy, managing principal of the Germer office in Houston, offering the following statement on Rechtmann’s untimely passing: “It’s been very difficult, a young bright talented lawyer with a very promising future in front of her. Everyone who worked with her respected and liked and loved her. It’s been devastating.”
Larry Campagna, managing partner of Chamberlain Hrdlicka, also provided a statement on the associates’ deaths: “All of us at Chamberlain Hrdlicka are deeply saddened by the tragic news. We send our sincerest condolences to the Greenwood and Rechtmann families and their loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the families’ privacy, we do not wish to comment any further.”
This is terribly sad. We here at Above the Law would like to extend our condolences to Candace Rechtmann’s and Tyler Greenwood’s family, friends, and colleagues during these troubling times.
