police line do not cross crime scene tapeThe Alex Murdaugh saga had one logical next step.

Murdaugh had told authorities that he’d found his wife and son murdered. Three months later, he claimed a hitman shot him in the head after sabotaging his car. But then… Murdaugh had hired the hitman himself? And the “hitman” said he didn’t really shoot him. And Murdaugh’s family firm cut him loose amid claims of embezzling and he lost his license. Then he was arrested on charges related to the death of the family housekeeper — whose family was supposed to get a life insurance payout that went missing. Then there was the indictment over money laundering and selling oxy. And this isn’t even getting into a man suspiciously killed near the Murdaugh home several years ago or how Murdaugh’s deceased son was implicated in the boating death of a woman.

So now Alex Murdaugh’s been indicted for the murder of his wife and son.

It feels like this was the other shoe that would drop for awhile now. Murdaugh’s lawyers are taking the stance that this inevitability inures to their client’s favor.

“Alex wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he did not have anything to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul,” the lawyers said. They said the police had prematurely narrowed in on Mr. Murdaugh and that he had no motive to kill them.

Perhaps. Though honestly nothing in this whole affair makes much sense.
