Thyroid tablets recalled after testing found excessive medication levels.

Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. has recalled one lot of its 30-mg thyroid medication after testing found that some pills may contain more medicine than intended. The recall was announced on August 24 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and covers products that were shipped across the country. The affected product is labeled Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg, and carries lot number 504950. The tablets were distributed between January 31 and September 30, 2025, and have an expiration date of September 30, 2026. The FDA said 3,655 units from the lot were released, with 1,955 of those units sold.

The medication is prescribed for people with hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormone. Thyroid medicine is used to bring hormone levels back into a normal range. If a tablet contains too much of the medicine, however, the body can receive more thyroid hormone than needed. That can lead to hyperthyroidism, which means the body has too much thyroid hormone. Signs can include weight loss, tiredness, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, chest pain, a fast heartbeat and changes in heart rhythm. The effects can be more serious when an excessive dose is taken for a longer period.

Older adults may face a greater risk of heart problems from too much thyroid medicine. Pregnant women also need special care because too much thyroid hormone during pregnancy has been linked with health problems for both the mother and baby. Infants can also be affected if they receive too much thyroid medicine, with possible effects on growth and development.

The company has said that no reports of harmful reactions connected to the recalled tablets had been received as of the August 24 announcement. Even so, the recall was issued because testing found the pills could be stronger than they were supposed to be. Patients who may have tablets from the recalled lot have been told not to stop taking the medicine on their own. Thyroid treatment is often taken on a regular schedule and suddenly stopping it can create other health concerns. Instead, patients should contact a doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider to determine what should happen next. A replacement prescription may be needed.

Vitruvias Therapeutics said it was contacting wholesalers by phone and email and telling them to stop distributing the affected lot. Pharmacies and other sellers with the recalled product are expected to follow the instructions and keep the tablets from reaching additional patients. The FDA also allows patients and healthcare workers to report suspected medication side effects or other problems tied to the recalled medicine through its MedWatch program. Reports can help federal health officials track problems involving medicines already on the market.

The recall comes during a period when several other drug recalls have been announced for different reasons, including concerns about contamination, drug mix-ups and product quality. Those recalls have involved medicines used for blood pressure, depression, heart conditions, kidney conditions and allergies. For patients taking thyroid medicine, the lot number is an important detail to check. A recall does not mean every bottle of the medication is affected. The current action applies to the specific 30-mg lot identified by Vitruvias Therapeutics and the FDA. Anyone with questions about a bottle from that lot should seek guidance from a health care provider or pharmacist before making changes to treatment.
